If you don’t exfoliate because you had one or two bad experiences, we’re here to change your mind. Exfoliating your skin regularly is essential to achieving and maintaining healthy, balanced skin.
There are numerous exfoliants out there to choose from, here’s some guidance to help you select the right one for you -
Chemical exfoliation: generally in a smooth, liquid form (serum, moisturizer, gel).
• All skin types benefit from chemical exfoliation, including the most delicate, sensitive skin.
• Depending on the ingredients, it can be your most gentle or your most aggressive exfoliant.
General recommendations:
• If you’re concerned about aging, look for Malic & Glycolic.
• If you’re concerned about acne, look for Mandelic & Salicylic.
• If you want brighter skin, look for Lactic & Citric.
• If you are sensitive, look for an enzyme exfoliant.
Physical exfoliation: commonly called a “scrub”, contains a bead like component to manually exfoliate the skin.
• All skin types can use a physical exfoliant, but those with sensitive or delicate skin you may want to opt for a chemical instead.
• Do not over scrub your skin, use gentle circular motions.
• Great to keep in the shower and use it in place of your daily cleanser.
General recommendations:
• If you have strong, oily or thick skin, look for a gel based scrub, it’s generally a more aggressive, dense formula with chemical exfoliants in the gel.
• If you have balanced or dry skin, look for a cream based scrub. They are generally buffered, meaning a scrub that has cleansing, softening, hydrating ingredients.
When using an exfoliant, especially if you haven’t in a while, you will immediately notice your skin feels softer, looks brighter and all of your other products work better. And after one or two cellular cycles, the treated skin that comes to the surface will begin to look more even, naturally more radiant and skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, will be noticeably improved.
The Bottom Line: Ask a licensed professional for guidance. Finding the right exfoliant for your unique skin is a game-changer to achieve healthy, happy skin.
